Can the Enneagram tell you what your favorite Thanksgiving dish is? No. That’s ridiculous. The Enneagram isn’t some silly quiz from the 2010 era of Buzzfeed. It’s a useful tool for understanding your interior life and the lives of people you love.
But that doesn’t mean we’re above using it in the spirit of the season. If you have a hard time remembering which Enneagram is which or just need a few pointers for where to focus your Thanksgiving dinner energy, let this be your guide.
Gravy: 1 — The Reformer
Enneagram Ones have a very specific vision for the way things ought to be and are purposeful about getting them there. They tend to see the world in stark blacks and whites, not unlike the gravy in a little scoop of mashed potatoes — carefully organized to keep everything separated just the way Ones like it.
Pumpkin Pie: 2 — The Helper
Enneagram Twos are People Pleasers, and few things please people more than pie. But more than that: Twos are generous and sweet — sometimes to a fault. Sound familiar?
Turkey: 3 — The Achiever
No side dishes here. Turkeys are a high risk/high reward dish, and they take someone committed to getting it right. If you like to show off and you’re willing to put the work in — and most Ones are — turkey is the dish for you.
Ham: 4 – The Individualist
Oh, what’s that? Ham isn’t a regular dish at your Thanksgiving table? Fours don’t know and they don’t care. No number on the Enneagram is more committed to doing things their own way.
Rolls: 5 – The Investigator
The humble dinner roll is far more elaborate then it lets on — half art and half science. Perfecting the roll takes someone with a keen eye for detail, a zest for research and plenty of patience.
6: Mac and Cheese – The Loyalist
Loyalists love to keep up with traditions, and it doesn’t get much more traditional than mac and cheese. Thanksgiving calls for your family’s recipe that’s been passed down for generations, and chances are if you are an Enneagram Six you will be very adamant about keeping that tradition alive.
Sweet Potato Casserole: 7 – The Enthusiast
Sweet potatoes? Brown sugar? Marshmallows? Candied nuts? The Enthusiast is always ready!
Cranberry Sauce: 8 – The Challenger
When it comes to this Thanksgiving dish, there’s no middle ground — you either love it or you don’t. And just like challengers, cranberry sauce pushes you to be decisive and make a choice, even if it causes some tension at the table.
Mashed Potatoes: 9 – The Peacemaker
No one has ever argued against having more mashed potatoes on their plate, just like no one argues against having more peace in their life. Just like Enneagram 9s, mashed potatoes are the best dish to step in and bring a delicious meal together.
