L.A. Restaurant Will Pay You Not to Use Your Phone at Dinner

We’ve all done it: At at nice restaurant for dinner, we check our phones, scouring Twitter, or texting, or peeking under the table for the latest scores. We don’t think we’re bothering anyone, but a recent Zagat survey found that 67% of diners in L.A. and 61% in New York think it’s inappropriate to be “texting, checking e-mail or talking on the phone” while eating at a restaurant.

Enter Mark Gold, owner and chef of L.A. eatery Eva, who is setting out to do something about it. He’s giving customers a 5% discount to leave their phone at the door. “We’re trying to create an ambience where you come in and really enjoy the experience and the food and the company,” Gold said. The question is, will people really be willing to give up their phones at a restaurant to save a few bucks?
