Jones Professor of Biogerontology at the USC Davis School of Gerontology, has helped author a study for Cell Metabolism that suggests eating lots of food with high animal protein (like meat and cheese) in your middle age increases your likelihood for cancer by four times, which is comparable to smoking. The study followed a large group of adults over nearly two decades, so the credentials are definitely there, but the researchers themselves are staying away from making any broad statements, since the subject of just how much protein is too much has long been a controversial topic among researchers.
