Oh Great. Meat and Cheese Might Be as Bad for You as Smoking.

Cheese lovers, stop reading now if you don’t want your world turned upside down. In the latest study to suggest an everyday activity might be slowly killing you, Valter Longo, the Edna M. Jones Professor of Biogerontology at the USC Davis School of Gerontology, has helped author a study for Cell Metabolism that suggests eating lots of food with high animal protein (like meat and cheese) in your middle age increases your likelihood for cancer by four times, which is comparable to smoking. The study followed a large group of adults over nearly two decades, so the credentials are definitely there, but the researchers themselves are staying away from making any broad statements, since the subject of just how much protein is too much has long been a controversial topic among researchers.
