Neuroscience: You’re Not an Adult Until 25

In the eyes of the law, 18-years-old is the official beginning of adulthood, but following new research, some neuroscientists claim you’re not fully mentally developed until 25. Child psychologist Laverne Athrobus explained the findings to the BBC, “Neuroscience has made these massive advances where we now don’t think that things just stop at a certain age, that actually there’s evidence of brain development well into early 20s and that actually the time at which things stop is much later than we first thought.” According to the new findings, a third stage of cognitive developments begins at 18, and that it isn’t until a person’s early twenties that that the brain’s prefrontal cortex—the area responsible for emotional maturity, overall judgment and even self-image—is completely developed …
