God uses Number 2.

God uses Number 2.

Ok, first blog. I am supposed to be blogging about what it is like to be the church nerd (aka “ops guy”). Let’s jump back in time a few years and review how we got here. I grew up in the church business. Pop was a pastor before I was born and he still is today. Mom spent her time raising my two brothers and I and helping him in any way she could. I went to college to become a computer programmer, hated it and switched to business. Lisa and I were married my junior year. I finished a year early and went right into my first job as a stockbroker. I loved it and hated it. I loved the endless income potential, hated that what I was doing after 3 years was exactly the same thing that I would be doing until I retired. I figured there had to be more that I was created for than to make rich people richer.

Fast forward… I have been working the “business” of the church (with my dad and now my brother) in an official capacity for 11 years now. I’ve built 50 million dollars worth of church buildings and been through the ins and outs of budgets and ministry issues. Lisa and I have two kids. I realized the unique call God put on my life. It is to be the #2… (it’s ok you can laugh). God has uniquely made me to carry the “here’s how we accomplish the goal” part. Every dynamic leader needs a team around him. I help lead that team.

My goal in this little corner of the electronic universe is to unpack what it looks like to carry the weight of supporting an unattainable vision. That is the vision of the church. I do everything from cleaning up poop on the front porch of the church to forecasting cash flow for q2. And I love to do it. I’ll be checking in regularly to discuss specifics, but for now I just wanted to let some of you know…that God uses #2…oh, and this blog will likely have middle school humor in it.
