Neue (pronounced “new”) is a lot of things—a creative, forward-thinking ministry resource, a collaborative community of emerging leaders, a fresh and innovative quarterly magazine with engaging articles and practical tools for impassioned leaders. Neue is also a place to be challenged, inspired and connected with other like-minded leaders for the Kingdom of God in this world. Our dream is to bring together people who are serious about living a humble, outward-focused Christianity that is both creative in expression and committed to the biblical message.
Why Neue? In UnChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks About Christianity … and Why It Matters, co-author David Kinnaman, president of The Barna Research Group, shares his research to educate and challenge the Church to respond to a generation that believes today’s Christians live and act more like “unChristians.” In a recent conversation with Kinnaman about the overwhelming influence of the Church in America, he said: “All of the great position of power the Christian community in America has been granted is not to be used to preserve that power, but to be given in sort of selfless service to create a more just, loving, merciful kind of world.” Neue is seeking to bring together unique voices that will help propel us into this kind of Christianity—one that serves the world out of a deep love for God and one that asks a great deal from its followers—a Christianity that, like Christ, was not here for His own sake, but the sake of others.
We are living in an exciting time for the Church, a time where young leaders are speaking out and a time when the Church is beginning to grasp the distinctions between consumer Christianity and cross-bearing Christianity. Neue is on the frontlines of the conversation with influential and emerging leaders within the Church today. Shane Claiborne, author of Jesus for President, and The Irresistible Revolution, says, “There are more and more people—especially young people—who are realizing that this economy and this culture, this American dream, looks very different from the dream of God.” As we maneuver through this realization that the message of Jesus was, indeed, counter-cultural, we begin to see that what God asks of us is much more than just adhering to a simple formula or a convenient worldview. What God asks of us is to die to ourselves and to act and live in a peculiar way, as community, in an ultra-individualistic society.
This ministry shift is also enabling us to see that those outside of Christianity are not the enemy, that we are one human race—all of us in desperate need of healing through Jesus Christ. We believe there is a growing number of emerging leaders who are doing bold things to communicate the message of grace in fearless ways. Through conversation, creativity and daring application, we desire to see a rich and generative community of forward-thinking leaders united for this cause—the mission of God in the world, right now. Because we believe the world doesn’t need to be judged; that’s God’s job—what the world needs is a bold example that the love of God is alive and well through His followers today.
