In a move that feels somehow inevitable in retrospect, Kanye West is taking his Sunday Service to Houston’s Lakewood Church and its infamous pastor Joel Osteen. He will attend the morning service for a Q+A with Osteen and then perform with his Sunday Service choir in the evening.
We don’t know much more than that but, well, what is there to know? Osteen plans to interview Kanye about the “journey to his faith.” West’s Sunday Service will be broadcast live so you can tune in and watch the whole thing.
According to Lakeland spokesman Donald Iloff, Jr., Osteen and Kanye are friends and have been trying to make this happen for a while. The two have a few things in common. A rarified tax bracket, for one. A fondness for prosperity gospel teaching for another.
But outside of that, Kanye’s religious circles are varied. It’s hard to think of anyone else who would be entertained by Lakeland Church, Liberty University and Hillsong. But in 2019, American Christianity is abiding more by cultural lines than theological ones.
