Watch: How Churches Are Renting Themselves Out to Stay Afloat

Should churches be a place to do business? CBS This Morning ran an interesting story this weekend that looks at a new trend at some churches that are struggling to stay open.

As the report notes, many churches—which are experiencing a decline in attendance—are renting out otherwise unused space to local businesses.

CBS spoke with Larry Duggins, who leads the “Missional Wisdom Foundation,” an organization whose mission is to “experiment with and teach about alternative forms of Christian community.” The Missional Wisdom Foundation helps churches find businesses that will rent out their unused spaces. Duggins told CBS, “Churches close when they can’t get beyond that, unless they have some extraordinary other way to get people to come attend.”

The idea is pretty simple. Many churches have massive facilities that go unused much of the time. Renting them out as mixed work spaces to businesses that need meeting places can not only help the community, it can bring in some much needed money for the church, of course.
