Dr. Hannah Gay, a University of Mississippi Medical Center pediatrician and former Ethiopian missionary, made global headlines for “functionally” curing a two-year-old of HIV. They say “functionally,” because Dr. Gay and her colleagues eradicated the virus to the point where it can no longer be detected in her blood, meaning it no longer requires treatment. The jury’s out right now on whether or not this was a one-time miracle, but it’s virtually unprecedented and very exciting.
