Theories Suggest Malaysian Flight Could Have Flown Off Course or Even Landed

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Malaysian Air Flight 370, which vanished with 239 passengers on board, is getting stranger by the day. New report based on satellite data suggests that hours after it went missing, the plane was still sending out signals, pinging satellites. Though a senior U.S. official told CNN that “there is probably a significant likelihood” that the plane crashed in the Indian Ocean, according to Reuters’ sources, “whoever was piloting the vanished jet was following navigational waypoints that would have taken the plane over the Andaman Islands.” As CNN notes, “Aviation experts say it’s possible, if highly unlikely, that someone could have hijacked and landed the giant Boeing 777 undetected.” A Malaysian police official told Reuters, “What we can say is we are looking at sabotage, with hijack still on the cards.”

Another phrase you might start hearing a lot of is “seismic event.” China is saying their seismologists detected a tremor on the sea floor between Vietnam and Malaysia on March 8 that may have been the crash of the plane.
