Street Artist’s New Work Creates Stir Among Brazilian World Cup Fans

Earlier this month, Brazilian street artist Paulo Ito created this stirring image on the outside of a schoolhouse, depicting a starving young boy with only a soccer ball to eat. In the weeks since, the painting has gone viral online and been a major subject of commentary in the Brazilian media. Ito told Slate that his work isn’t meant to be political or an indictment against a specific leader, but is a criticism of modern society in the country: Poverty levels are still extremely high in Brazil, where nearly a billion dollars are being spend in preparation for the upcoming World Cup Games. He told Slate, “The truth is there is so much wrong in Brazil that it is difficult to know where to start … We need to show the world or ourselves that the situation is still not good” …
