Report: U.N. Peacekeepers Frequently Sexually Exploit Locals

A disturbing new report from the U.N.’s internal oversight group says that the sexual exploitation of local communities by U.N. peacekeepers has become commonplace. The investigators found that when peacekeepers are dispatched to areas of conflict or where a natural disaster has occurred (it focused on Haiti and Liberia), the peacekeeping forces from the United Nations would frequently pay for sex from women who were desperate for basic necessities. The report said, “For rural women, hunger, lack of shelter, baby care items, medication and household items were frequently cited as the ‘triggering need.'” According to Reuters, between 2008 and 2013, “480 allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse” had been made against U.N. peacekeeping troops around the world.
