Despite what Don Draper would have you believe, smoking is really, really bad for you, and according to a new report, it’s even worse than everyone initially believed. The latest surgeon general release linked several new diseases to smoking cigarettes including rheumatoid arthritis, Type 2 diabetes, cleft palate birth defects, a muscular condition that causes blindness, as well as, colorectal and liver cancer. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told USA Today that the research surprised even them: “Even after 50 years, we’re still finding new ways that smoking maims and kills people.” They estimated that 18% of American adults are smokers, and the habit is responsible for the deaths of 20 million Americans since 1964.
