Report: One in Every 30 American Children Is Homeless

According to a new heartbreaking report titled “America’s Youngest Outcasts,” in 2013, there were 2.5 million children in the United States who were homeless at some point, an eight percent increase over the previous year. The National Center on Family Homelessness, who issued the report, said that the number of homeless children in America—one in every 30 kids—is an all-time high. Though the state-by-state report says that many factors have led to the growing problem of child homelessness (as this AP story outlines) “the nation’s high poverty rate, the lack of affordable housing and the impacts of pervasive domestic violence,” are among the leading causes. The organization behind the report says that to help children facing homelessness, parents must be provided with greater numbers of job opportunities, new services for victims of domestic violence should be created and the availability of affordable housing must be expanded …
