Pentagon: Reports of Sexual Assaults in the Military Up 50% Last Year

A new report from the Pentagon says that compared to 2012, reports of sexual assaults in the military were up by 50 percent. But, according to some Department of Defense officials, the numbers are not necessarily a bad thing. In an interview with the AP, the Pentagon’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office head, Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Snow, explained. “We assess that this unprecedented increase is consistent with a growing confidence in the response systems.” In fact, as The Wire notes, the military took “some action” within its justice system against 73 percent of those accused of sexual assault in 2013.
