Kim Jong Un Missed another Big Event in North Korea

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un—who has not been seen publically for more than a month—missed another really big event in the country yesterday, leading to more speculation that something is wrong. Whether he is actually gravely ill or has been deposed by political rivals is unclear, but the 69th anniversary of the Worker’s Party founding event he just skipped is a big deal. He was also absent from a ceremony honoring his late father this week, Kim Jong Il which, as The Daily Beast notes, is also strange: “Kim’s skipping the event would ordinarily be considered a serious breach of the regime’s Confucian-inspired protocol, a failure to honor one’s father and predecessor.” A few days ago, several high-ranking North Korean officials made a friendly visit to South Korea, widely seen as an unprecedented move.
