Today, Hawaii will become the 15th state to legalize gay marriage. At a ceremony this afternoon Governor Neil Abercrombie will sign a bill that will make same-sex marriage legal in the state. Though the bill was met with some opposition—including a lawsuit from lawmaker Rep. Bob McDermott in an effort to block the new legislation—it was passed on a 19-4 Senate vote. In a statement, Abercrombie said, “I look forward to signing this significant piece of legislation, which provides marriage equity and fully recognizes and protects religious freedoms.” The bill included several amendments that contained exemptions for religious organizations.
