Get to Know the San Pedro Prison

The BBC has put together a fascinating photo journal on San Pedro—a jail in La Paz, Bolivia, that houses about 1,500 inmates and has evolved into a self-contained community. Inside the jail walls, there are markets, children running in the streets, sports teams, restaurants, hair salons and a hotel. Inmates get jobs at the various markets located around the jail to pay rent for their cells, which can range from cheap and filthy to expensive and luxurious, and their families often move in with them (although they are allowed to come and go as they please). Pietro Paolini, an Italian photographer, has taken a lot more pictures over at Terra Project
