The Florida Boy With the Brain-Eating Amoeba Has a Small Victory

The situation for Zachary Reyna, the 11-year-old boy who has contracted a rare but deadly “brain-eating” amoeba, remains pretty grim, but it’s slightly less grim than it was originally. Zachary’s father took to Facebook to announce that treatment had beaten the infection. Doctors haven’t given an actual prognosis yet and are urging caution, but the Reyna family has been encouraged by the story of Kali Hardig, a 12-year-old in Arkansas who recently became only the third known survivor of this infection (generally, it has a fatality rate of well over 99%). “We all go through tough times,” Zachary’s father posted. “And we need to find God and prayer to get through [sic] theses slumps of life” …
