China Might Soon Forbid Online Church Services

China’s crackdown on religion appears to be ramping up.

This week, China’s State Administration for Religious Affairs posted proposed new regulations that would make online church services illegal. The draft would  “forbid the streaming of religious ceremonies (live on the internet), including prayer, preaching and even burning incense,” according to AsiaNews.

The public in the country has until Oct. 9 to provide feedback on the measure that seeks to “regulate internet religious information service activities and maintain religious harmony and social harmony.”

In recent years, China has increasingly crackdown on Christianity, and currently, only churches approved by the state are technically allowed to operate. There have been numerous reports of officials in China tearing down megachurches, burning Bibles and destroying crosses.
