According to U.S. officials, of the over 1,000 inquiries about Americans in Nepal since Saturday’s earthquake, the U.S. Embassy in the country has accounted for more than 500 of those people. That leaves around 500 possibly unaccounted for, though the exact number still missing is not quite clear, since the list could include duplicate names or mistaken inquiries. It’s estimated that more than 3,000 Americans were traveling in Nepal when the earthquake hit, since it is currently peak tourism season in the country.
