Officials in the state of Arkansas have executed a death-row prisoner for the first time in longer than a decade.
Last night, 51-year old Ledell Lee received lethal injection as a consequence of murdering a woman in 1993. His execution came after state and federal courts rejected several appeals by his lawyers.
Lee is the first person to die by lethal injection in Arkansas since November 2005.
The state has been at the center of a firestorm of media surrounding a plan to execute eight people over a very short span. So far, that plan hasn’t come together as initially laid out. But last night’s execution makes it clear that enough is in place to end the life of one, for now at least.
