Music Blog Guest: Anathallo’s Matt Joynt

Have you been wondering what’s up with the front-man of Chi-indie-rock’s finest? this is what’s up:

Dylan : Hi Matt. So what’s your favorite CD at our present moment?

Matt: Well Dylan, let me start by saying that it’s a beautiful Sunday morning. I’m sitting in my apartment in a really comfortable chair eating a baguette with apricot preserve. Life really couldn’t get much better… Ok, music… I don’t really have one favorite, but here are a few things that I’ve been listening to lately:

Neko Case – “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood”
Ribbons of Song – “Comb my Cowlicks Down”
The Forms – “The Forms”
High Places – “David Horvitz 7″ Picture Disc”
Chick Corea – “Now He Sings, Now He Sobs”
Max Roach – “Percussion Bitter Sweet”

Dylan: I love music. What’s the best show you’ve seen recently?

Matt: I saw The Forms last night at the Beat Kitchen. They played a short set (bummer!) because there were some sound troubles (in spite of a great sounding check…). Anyway, I just love seeing these guys live. After hearing their new record, I was really curious to see how things would translate into a live performance (lots of lush vocal harmonies throughout the new material). Alex, Jackson, and Brendan really took it to the house! “Alpha” sounded so beautiful. Matt is one of my favorite live drummers to watch. Good night.

Dylan: is there a philosophical/theological thought you’d like to share with the ReleBlog?

Matt: “Where there is carrion lying, meat-eating birds circle and descend. Life and death are two. The living attack the dead, to their own profit. The dead lose nothing by it. They gain too, by being disposed of. Or they seem to, if you must think in terms of gain and loss […] but there is no body to be found. The birds may come and circle for a while in the place where it is thought to be. But they soon go elsewhere. When they are gone, the “nothing,” the “no-body” that was there, suddenly appears.” -Thomas Merton from “Zen and the Birds of Appetite”

Dylan: So what are you reading right now Matt?

Matt: I’m reading a few books…
Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian”
Madeleine L’Engle’s “Walking on Water”
Miranda July’s “No One Belongs Here More Than You”
Daniel G. Amen M.D.’s “Sex on the Brain”

Dylan: what are you wearing right now?
Matt: Plaid Reversible (yes!) Umbro Soccer shorts
A Page France t-shirt that Clint designed with a picture that looks suspiciously like George Bush.

Holla!
