Vampire Weekend

I think some of you ReleBlog readers will like this music. Vampire Weekend combines the island grooves of Paul Simon with the garage rock simplicity of The Strokes, resulting in the first great Pop-Rock album of 2008. This self-titled debut circled around the internet early last year, but hasn’t seen a proper release until today (1/29). XL Recordings is taking this Afro-dance college music to the masses, it will definitely rouse up some ears this year.

Now be warned you listeners: there will be swearing, but it will be as cute as the f-word can be. This is music for a Wes Anderson soundtrack, just waiting to be fit somewhere between The Kinks and Mark Mothersbaugh. Max Fischer will hop on the Belafonte in your mind when you hear M79.
I hate to make this post right after Vampire Weekend gets “Best New Music’d,” but it’s definitely worth a listen or two. Here’s a nice video to watch:

“Why would you lie about how much coal you have?
Why would you lie about something dumb like that?
Why would you lie about anything at all?
First the window, then it’s to the wall,
Lil’ Jon, he always tells the truth.”
