‘Wheel of Time’ Fantasy TV Series Confirmed from Amazon

Robert Jordan’s massively popular fantasy series The Wheel of Time is receiving a series order from Amazon. The 14-book fantasy series will manifest as a one-hour drama.

Wheel of Time has sold more than 90 million copies worldwide, making it the biggest-selling fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings. The series is set in a world where magic exists but can only be used by women. The main character, Moiraine, leads a journey with five young men and women, one of whom might be the reincarnation of someone with the power to save or destroy all of humanity. The series draws on a lot of Buddhist and Hindu teachings as well as eastern philosophy.

There’s no word yet on how many seasons the show will run for, but with 14 books to draw from, this looks like another play from Amazon to craft a large-budget fantasy epic. The studio is also adapting a show from Lord of the Rings, with reports saying the show will center on a young Aragorn. (h/t Hollywood Reporter)

In other words, Amazon wants the next Game of Thrones. That fantasy series will come to a close next summer, so there will be space in the market for a mass-appeal, escapist show. Personally, we’d enjoy a Wrinkle In Time series first and foremost, but maybe that was a given.
