If we know anything is guaranteed in any of the existing Transformers films, it’s that giant robots are going to smash each other to pieces while square-jawed men try to stop them. If anything is to be deduced from the Bumblebee trailer, the new spinoff movie featuring the franchise’s scrappiest bot, it’s that, well, this one could be a little different.
A couple things indicate this might be a better movie than expected: 1) Hailee Steinfeld is starring. She had an Oscar nomination for True Grit in 2010, and even though she’s more associated with her music now than her acting, she still lends this one a certain amount of clout.
2) John Cena. He’s always welcome. Love you, John, in case you’re reading this.
3) The director is Travis Knight, whose debut behind the camera came in Kubo and the Two Strings. That’s a strong movie, and it could indicate that this bot movie has a little more soul to it than what we’re used to from the franchise. Consider us skeptical, but optimistic. Bumblebee is in theaters this Christmas.
