Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story premieres tonight on the Paramount Network and BET. The six-part series dives into the shooting of Trayvon Martin at the hands of George Zimmerman and its legacy within the nation’s ongoing debate over police brutality, gun violence and systemic racism.
The series is notable for being the first screen platform on which Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, Martin’s parents, share their stories and give interviews in full.
On July 13, 2013, a Florida jury acquitted George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, of fatally shooting Trayvon Martin. At the time of the shooting, Martin was unarmed and wearing a now-infamous hoodie. The acquittal saw protesters across the nation and a continuing dialogue everywhere from Washington to the NFL.
