It’s not every day that you hear a late night TV host read scripture on the air to the applause of a studio audience. But that’s exactly what happened as Stephen Colbert offered his take on Jeff Sessions’ recent remarks about immigration.
The attorney general cited Romans 13, stopping at the part where Paul instructs Christians to obey the authorities, to justify a policy that allows border police to separate immigrant families trying to enter the U.S.
Colbert explains that passage needs to be read in context, because later in that same chapter the verse calls for neighborly love.
