Here’s VICE’s Short Documentary on Pastors Who Stop Believing in God

While VICE itself has a reputation for edgelord clickbait (“I Razor Scootered Down an Active Volcano While Tripping Acid. Here’s What I Learned.”), their HBO show VICE News Tonight has done some spectacular journalism, including a memorably chilling look at the white nationalist groups that organized the riot in Charlottesville.

For their latest segment, the team took a look at clergy members who have stopped believing in God.

The seven and a half minute segment looks at former pastors (and one current pastor) who realized that what they were saying publicly no longer matched up with what they believed personally.

The people interviewed run the gamut from a young couple still struggling with how to tell their families that they no longer believe (here’s hoping their families aren’t big VICE News Tonight watchers) to a fifth-generation Southern Baptist preacher and Southeastern Seminary grad who now co-runs an online community for people like him: clergy who now identify as atheists.

He estimates that one in five of the people in his group are still employed by a church. Wow. It’s definitely worth the watch.
