When you think of virtual reality, Tetris might not be the first thing you think of, but PlayStation VR is banking on the classic, with the announcement of the upcoming Tetris Effect.
The trailer is a complete and utter mind trip. Colors and shapes explode in a kaleidoscope. Colorful spheres smash into each other. Volcanos erupt. Triangular prisms pulse and glow and spin. Over all of it a scholarly gentlemen’s voice tells you about the resonant presence of blocks in the minds of game players.
Then, freaking Tetris, man. The game’s description says: “Named after a real-world phenomenon where images of falling blocks linger in players’ vision, thoughts, and dreams, Tetris Effect amplifies this feeling by surrounding you with fantastic worlds that react and evolve based on how you play.”
That’s insane. Tetris is insane. Why are we freaking out so much about Tetris? We’re going to watch this trailer again.
