The New ‘Toy Story 4’ Trailer Will Reignite Your Hope for the Franchise’s Return

When the first details were revealed about Toy Story 4, we had some skepticism. For one thing, the ending of Toy Story 3  was a perfect cap on the franchise, and we were worried to see that marred, but for another thing, the new movie looked to be incorporating some questionable characters.

Forky, the hand-made toy that raised eyebrows in the initial teaser, takes center stage in the movie’s new full-length trailer. Voiced charmingly by Arrested Development and Veep star Tony Hale, Forky is a spork who’s pulled into the plaything world when Bonnie, the little girl from the end of the third movie, gives him googly eyes and pipe cleaner arms. This is our first look at how Forky will operate among the classic toys of the series, and it looks like his inner turmoil and distress over being something he’s not will bring some enjoyable jokes and raise some interesting questions.

Yes, it looks like Toy Story 4 is leaning hard into the philosophical questions raised by the introduction of Forky. Namely: What makes a toy a toy, and what’s the deal with these things becoming sentient anyway? It’s a better move than leaving all those questions floating for the masses to pick apart, like Cars does its talking vehicle apocalypse world.

Other goodies in this ad: renegade Bo Peep, a killer Beach Boys cue and some fiendish-looking villainous toys. We also have Buzz Lightyear rollicking around with Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele’s new characters, and some warm-the-heart flashback shots of Andy’s bedroom.

We’re back in. We’re all the way back in. Toy Story 4 hits theaters June 21.
