It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything from Taylor Swift, but Delicate was well worth the wait. During the iHeartRadio Music Awards, after winning female artist of the year, the singer-songwriter dropped the music video for Delicate, her fourth single from her latest album, Reputation.
It’s safe to say that this video is not what anyone was expecting.
The song is rumored to be written about her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, but the video is far from romantic. The video features a classic Taylor, who finally manages to evade the crippling debt of fame and media attention, becomes invisible and, using her newfound superpower, quite literally dances as if no one is watching.
She revels in her invisibility, hinting to real-life Taylor, who wiped her social media accounts clean last year and now does everything possible to stay out of the public eye. She tosses her stiletto heels, tears the bottom of her long blue gown, and dances (pretty badly) through the hotel lobby, in an elevator, through an empty room and even outside in the pouring rain, on top of a car.
Swift really wanted to drive this idea home: She may be gone from the public eye, but she’s doing better than she ever was.
