Saiorse Ronan and Margot Robbie Vie for the Throne in ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ Trailer

Ah man, nothing like a good ol’ fashioned dispute over the sovereignty of a European nation, eh? That’s what we’re served up in the trailer for Mary, Queen of Scots, the new drama from Focus Features out in December, starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie.

Mary, Queen of Scots ruled in the 16th century. Through complicated bloodline reasons, she had what many thought to be a legitimate claim to the English crown over her first cousin, Elizabeth I. Mary attempted to overthrow Elizabeth, but the (rightful?) rebellion was suppressed by English forces, and Mary was imprisoned and executed by her longtime friend-turned-rival.

Saoirse Ronan, an Oscar nominee for her performances in Atonement and Lady Bird, plays Mary Stuart, while Margot Robbie, fresh off her own nomination for I, Tonya last year, is opposite her as Elizabeth I. Expect both women to be in the awards discussion again this year when Mary, Queen of Scots hits theaters December 7.
