Quack Attack: ‘The Mighty Ducks’ Is Coming Back With Emilio Estevez

The quack attack is back, Jack! One of Disney’s most weirdly beloved ’90s gems is returning in a Flying V-formation, and it’s got Emilio Estevez at the head, right where he belongs. Yes, The Mighty Ducks will return with at least one of its charter cast members.

No word yet on whether or not anyone else will be joining Coach Gordon Bombay for another shot at ice hockey stardom. In fact, we don’t even know much more about this project other than it will apparently be a series and it’ll be coming to Disney Plus.

/Film published a leaked logline of the movie last year that read “After getting kicked off the junior division Mighty Ducks team, a 13-year-old boy and his mom decide to start their own team, finding players, a coach, and a place to play.” That sounds more or less like the premise of the first Mighty Ducks movie, which released in 1992 to abysmal reviews but nevertheless earned a place in the ’90s kids’ sports movie canon along with movies like Space Jam and The Sandlot.

But hey, Disney Plus’ whole empire is built on nostalgia, so don’t expect anyone here to start fixing what ain’t broke. The original Mighty Ducks launched a couple careers from its cast of kids, serving as a Hollywood trampoline for actors like Joshua Jackson (Fringe), Marguerite Moreau (Wet Hot American Summer), Eldon Henson (Daredevil) and Jussie Smollett (Empire). Will any of them lace the skates back up for another shot at glory? Stay tuned.
