‘Noah’ Promos to Feature a Warning that ‘Artistic License Has Been Taken’

The promos for the upcoming Biblically-inspired epic Noah will now carry a disclaimer, letting viewers know that the film is not a literal interpretation of the story. The move comes at the request of Jerry A. Johnson, president and CEO of The National Religious Broadcasters, who actually liked the film. He wrote, “We are grateful that Paramount is striving, with this disclaimer, to strike a proper balance between artistic creativity, character development, and honoring the sacred scripture.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, all marketing for the movie will now carry the lines:

The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis.

Despite a seemingly misleading survey from a faith-based group attempting to show that Christians disapproved of the film (without even seeing it), early screenings of Noah are getting solid feedback from some Christian critics. Movieguide’s Dr. Ted Baehr—who’s typically critical of films that don’t align with a conservative worldview—told The Christian Post that “The primary message that comes out of the film is the depravity of man and the judgment of God.” Producer and filmmaker Phil Cooke told the news site that, “Sin is evident in the film, God’s saving grace is evident in the film,” and the ark is “to the letter, the way the Bible describes it.” The movie hits theaters on March 28 …
