Every generation gets at least one artist to remind them of what country music can and should be. The current generation actually has a few, with artists like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton doing the old genre proud with music that has more in common with Folsom Prison than the Florida Georgia Line.
Kasey Musgraves belongs on that list too, with this year’s Golden Hour serving as a veritable embarrassment of sonic, lyric and emotional riches. She stopped by the BBC to record a cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” adding some Americana earthiness to the shimmery britpop hit. It’s great.
Musgraves’ Golden Hour is out now. If you haven’t listened to it yet, do yourself a favor and get caught up now, lest you feel left out when you see it on a bunch of “Best of 2018” lists in December.
