Trailer: ‘The Jesus Music’ Documentary Is Here to Put Contemporary Christian Music Under the Microscope

We’ve got our first teaser for The Jesus Music, a new documentary featuring a who’s who of CCM stars past and present to explore the history of Contemporary Christian Music, from its “why should the devil have all the good music?” beginnings to its modern, worship-fueled domination. The doc is being helmed by the Erwin brothers of I Can Only Imagine fame and they clearly put their deep rolodexes to work here. The trailer alone teases appearances from Michael W. Smith, TobyMac, Michael Tait, Kevin Max, Kari Jobe, Lauren Daigle, Joel Houston, Lecrae, Chris Tomlin, Rebecca St. James, Skillet’s John Cooper, David Crowder, Kirk Franklin, the queen bee herself Amy Grant and tons more.

What we don’t have is any idea of just what sort of story we’ll be telling here, because there’s a lot of ways one could go about this narrative. Will The Jesus Music be a sappy hagiography or penetrating exploration of the numerous complications of branding music for a specific religious subculture? The film’s synopsis says it will tackle “the universal power of music from these artists shine through from their messages of passion, sacrifice and redemption that inspire millions of devoted listeners.”

Guess we’ll find out this fall, when the movie drops in theaters.
