7. Snail Mail: Lush
Indie rockers singing about the ennui of youth are a dime a dozen, but newly minted high school grad Lindsey Jordan sets herself universes apart from the crowd with an amazing degree of clarity about what it means to be young.
On the surface, she’s just another 18-year-old with a guitar, a sense of despair about the suburbs and an abundance of free time. But as Snail Mail, Jordan has a keen ear for the past (there’s more than a little Liz Phair and Paramore here) and more importantly, a vision of the future.
The confidence with which she filters her tried-and-true mid-tempo rock through the post-Channel ORANGE zeitgeist is a wonder to behold, and inspires confidence that as good as Lush is, it’s just the beginning.
