The original Space Jam movie soundtrack came at a time when movie soundtracks generated lots of genuine hits, and this one was no exception, including numbers like the Quad City DJs “Space Jam” and, of course, Seal’s “Fly Like an Eagle.” The suits being Space Jam: A New Legacy are clearly hoping lightning strikes twice, and they’ve assembled quite a team to make it happen. Lil Baby, fresh off “Slidin” and his “Body in Motion” video with DJ Khaled, teams up with Gospel legend Kirk Franklin for “We Win.”
The song absolutely whips, featuring Franklin’s typically great Gospel stylings and Lil Baby’s gift for thoughtful bars. The song is far more than a positive bit of chest-puffing, with Lil Baby touting both his faith (“Long as I keep puttin’ my faith and trust in God
I know that everything will be fine”) and the virtues of rejecting hustle culture to embrace a more realistic life tempo (“Strivin’ for greatness / At the same time, keepin’ my patience / Can’t be racin’ to no early grave, I’m cool with this pacin'”).
Space Jam: A New Legacy stars Lebron James and the Looney Tunes crew, and will drop in theaters and on HBO Max in July. If it’s half as good as this song, we’re in for a treat.
