Hear a New Song Written By a Baby Before She Was Born

Luca Yupanqui is only a toddler, but she’s already got an album under her belt. In fact, she had the whole thing in the can before she was born, and what have you done with your one, wild, precious life?

Luca is the duaghter of Psychic Ills bassist Elizabeth Hart and Lee Scratch Perry collaborator Iván Diaz Mathé. While Hart was pregnant, they hooked her belly up to biosonic MIDI technology that transformed Luca’s movements into sound over the course of her in utero development. Then, after Luca was born, her parents mixed the audio into a new album, Sounds of the Unborn. Sounds like a weird art project but it’s actually pretty soothing!

“We did some Super 8 footage during the recording sessions and later we teamed up with artist Victoria Keddie because we love her approach and aesthetic,” Mathé told Stereogum about the video for “V4.3 pt. 2.” “She processed the film with analog gear and created a visual trip that summarizes what we felt while creating this album.”

The full album will be released on April 2.
