Is it hard to be famous? Well, nobody reading this can answer from experience. It’s definitely hard to be not famous — in the sense that we’ve got bills, jobs and the burden of knowing the masses don’t care about our opinions. But fame sure looks like it’s got its own trials, and now Justin Bieber is musing about some of those struggles in a new song called “Lonely,” which he performed with Benny Blanco. It makes a compelling case for the fact that being a celeb is no picnic and comes with its own fair share of obstacles to mental, emotional and spiritual health.
It’s part of Bieber’s broader recent turn towards a more introspective career that has included a very public re-prioritizing of his relationship with his faith. “I want to walk in the plans God has for me and not try to do it on my own,” Bieber posted on Instagram last month. “I’m grateful I can walk with Jesus as he leads the way.”
Bieber debuted the song on Saturday Night Live after performing his latest hit “Holy,” with his special guest star/SNL fav Chance the Rapper.
