Annette received enormously polarized reactions at Cannes Film Festival, where famed filmmaking genius/weirdo Leos Carax debuted his latest bowl of cinematic gumbo. The movie is a pop opera that features original tunes from the Sparks and stars Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard as starcrossed lovers whose romance hits a snag with the birth of their mysterious child. It got a five-minute standing ovation at Cannes, even as some critics went on to blast the sheer amount of audacious, surreal imagery that has become Carax’s trademark in movies like Holy Motors.
Is it good? Is it bad? Right now, that depends on who you ask. It does sound like it’s emphatically not for everyone (and a couple early reviews of made a note of the sexual content, so it’s definitely not for the kids) but Amazon Prime believed in it enough to buy distribution rights. The trailer gives us a hint of just how bananas things get without revealing much about the plot itself, so the curious will just have to catch Annette in its limited theatrical run later this month, or wait till August 20 when it drops on Prime.
