Trailer: Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd Explore the Realities of Grief in ‘The Starling’

Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Identity Thief) and Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, This is 40) are flexing their dramatic acting chops in a new heart-wrenching Netflix film, The Starling

Lilly (McCarthy) and Jack (O’Dowd) endure hardships in their marriage, which the trailer hints at but leaves as a small mystery. Jack copes by entering a mental health program, which seems to have mixed results, while Lilly engages in a battle with a territorial bird over ownership of the garden. Directed by Oscar-nominated director Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures), the film explores the various ways humans cope with grief and the strength it takes to heal from hurt.

After the last year and a half, many of us have experienced varying levels of hardships. Everyone deals with grief in their own way, and this film seems to show that there are countless ways to find healing — some less conventional than others.

The film is getting a theatrical release in select theaters Sept. 17, and it will hit Netflix the following week on Sept. 24.
