Kristen Stewart is getting tons of Oscar buzz for her performance as Diana, Princess of Wales, in Pablo Larraín’s Spencer, and now we’ve got our first full look at what all the hype is about. Larraín, who helmed the wonderful Jackie, wisely avoids the more sensationalized moments of Princess Di’s life, focusing instead on three days over Christmas with the royal family. As her marriage erodes and the pressure of the global spotlight takes its toll, the people’s princess weighs her options and tries to balance her two identities: one as a global icon, the other as a mom. Stewart has spent the last few years escaping the Twilight vortex by sticking to smaller, indie fare, largely preferring low-flying oddball features over big franchises. That’s paid off by earning her a reputation among film buffs and critics as a gifted actor, and Spencer is looking to be her first chance to garner some big awards. She’s certainly compelling in this trailer, set to a slowed down cover (of course) of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day.”
The movie also stars Timothy Spall (Harry Potter), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Jack Farthing (Poldark). We’ll see how it holds up when it releases on November 5.
