Holy smokes. Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem and, of course, Zendaya are uniting under Denis Villeneuve to bring us the latest attempt to adapt Frank Herbert’s scifi classic and, look, if this team can’t do it, it can’t be done. The full trailer certainly looks promising, featuring tons of kinetic action, spices blowing in the wind, fisticuffs and sandworms, but the real secret weapon here is Villeneuve’s eye. This is the guy who made Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 and Sicario; some of the handsomest, smartest and most engaging big movies of the last few years.
Like all attempts to adapt Dune, the production seems to have been born under an unlucky star, facing multiple COVID-related delays. However, all’s well that ends well and this definitely looks like it’s gonna end just fine. If you’ve read Dune, you’re probably aware that this trailer goes a little heavier on big action sequences than the book necessarily provides but, well, you gotta sell a movie somehow. And in 2021, that means lots of explosions, Oscar Isaac sporting a salt-and-pepper beard, Jason Momoa knocking bad guys on their butts and a sl0w-motion Chalamet/Zendaya kiss. Again, if this movie can’t make Dune work, then maybe Dune just wasn’t meant to be a movie. We’ll find out this Christmas.
