Marcus Mumford Wouldn’t Call Himself a Christian

The Mumford boys have long preferred to keep their faith a matter of Mumfordian Mystery. But now, in their first cover story for Rolling Stone, Marcus opens up about it in depth, even if what he says might leave you with more questions than answers. Is he a Christian? “I don’t really like that word,” he says.

Mumford, whose lyrics have long been heralded for their pseudo-Christian content goes onto say that the word Christian “comes with so much baggage. So, no, I wouldn’t call myself a Christian. I think the word just conjures up all these religious images that I don’t really like. I have my personal views about the person of Jesus and who he was. Like, you ask a Muslim and they’ll say, ‘Jesus was awesome’—they’re not Christians, but they still love Jesus.
