Introducing the First Cut of Applicants to Go Live on Mars Forever

RELEVANT would like to congratulate the 1,058 people who made the first cut in the doomed Mars life vacation/reality television show thing. You all make interesting life choices.

If you haven’t been following this story, it’s as crazy as it sounds. A bunch of able-minded adults have applied, without coercion, to be part of the first trip to Mars. In 2025, the eventual “winners” will board a spaceship and go to Mars and live there and die there, because this is a one-way trip. Oh, and they’re sending along a film crew too, because why quarantine reality TV to just one planet in the solar system? The group’s co-founder, Bas Landsorp, said that it was difficult, out of the 200,000 applicants, to tell between “those who we feel are physically and mentally adept to become human ambassadors on Mars from those who are obviously taking the mission much less seriously.” Mr. Landsorp might want to note that everyone he selected is open to taking a one way trip to Mars so being mentally adept is a relative term here.

And, as you might expect, most of the applicants are from the United States. Time to let the universe know what this country is all about …
