If you’ve spent much time on Instagram, you’ve likely encountered posts promoting diet products, weird detox drinks and straight-up cosmetic surgery. Now, their parent company Facebook is doing something about it.
Both of the platforms are implementing a new policy that will make posts featuring those types of products restricted to users who are over the age of 18 if the post is trying to sell them to users or include an actual price.
Also, if posts make “miraculous” healthy claims about products that it is to trying sell, than they will be taken down.
Emma Collins, Instagram’s public policy manager seemed to acknowledge just how unhealthy bad information about self-image could be.
She explained, “We want Instagram to be a positive place for everyone that uses it and this policy is part of our ongoing work to reduce the pressure that people can sometimes feel as a result of social media.”
