It’s really happening: Netflix has announced “Tiger King 2” is coming soon.
The first season of the series, “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” — which premiered way back at the beginning of the pandemic — told the story of eccentric Oklahoma exotic zoo keeper Joseph “Joe Exotic” Maldonado-Passage, who got caught in a murder-for-hire ploy against his arch rival Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue in Florida. The have-to-see-it-to-believe-it documentary became a national phenomenon and was one of Netflix’s most watched shows of 2020.
At the end of the first season, Maldonado-Passage was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison after being convicted of trying to hire two men to kill Baskin. Since then, the stars have been on a wild ride.
After an unsuccessful attempt at getting former President Donald Trump to pardon him before he left office, a federal appeals court ruled in July that Joe should get a shorter prison sentence. Exotic is also in a legal battle with just about everyone from the documentary, including his former business partner Jeff Lowe and several former colleagues for a claim they planted evidence against him. Exotic and his fifth husband, Dillon Passage, are also currently separated.
On the other side, Baskin has had the time of her life. From being name-dropped in a Megan Thee Stallion song to performing on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” the free-spirited big cat rescuer has been enjoying some time in the spotlight.
The second season was filmed in 2020 and into part of 2021. We don’t know yet which characters from the first season will make an appearance, but we’re excited to see what sort of insane plot the self-proclaimed Tiger King has gotten himself wrapped up into now.
