Two filmmakers planning to make a movie about convicted murder and abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell are claiming that Kickstarter attempted to censor their campaign. Producers Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer, who previously used the crowdfunding platform to raise money for their movie FrackNation, have since moved the funding effort for Gosnell to IndieGoGo. The drama with Kickstarter begans after the producers say they received an email from Kickstarter admins informing them that certain phrases (specifically, “1000s of babies stabbed to death”) be removed from the page.
The filmmakers say that when Breitbart News ran a story about the censorship claim, Kickstarter then sent an “acceptance letter” that contained a warning that if “we find things that are objectionable” the project could be removed. Kickstarter CEO Yancey Stickler went to Twitter, defending the acceptance letter, claiming that the project had been accepted, and called Breitbart’s story “false.” At the very least, the contentious back-and-forth has seemed to raise some awareness about the movie—it’s new IndieGoGo campaign brought in more than $331,819. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker McAleer said, “[Gosnell is] a real-life Hannibal Lecter. It’s an omission that Hollywood is ignoring the biggest serial killer in American history, and we’re going to fill that gap” …
